Simulation CFD Bronze Certification: A Tale of Two Techies

February 28, 2014 By April Raque Leave a comment

I sat down with Applications Engineer Adrianna Schneider and Solutions Engineer Chris Breland to discuss the importance of advanced certification, as well as their experience during the Simulation Bronze Certification process.

First, let’s define the Autodesk Simulation Portfolio. There are three very different Simulation technologies available: Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for Mechanical; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry; and Moldflow for the Manufacturing Industry.

Both Adrianna and Chris have achieved the Bronze level of Certification of Autodesk Simulation CFD for Technical Engineers, with Chris also having his Certification in Simulation Mechanical. With this advanced certification, the technical team understands Autodesk Simulation and has the ability to implement both solutions and services for this product. In addition, they are experts in demonstrating velocity profiles and thermal gradients, as well as the decision center features of Simulation CFD and Mechanical.

I asked them to share their thoughts on the importance of certification in Simulation.

Adrianna: “I think creating an environment for clients, where they feel confident that their instructor is certified in the workflow and tools they are presenting, provides a sense of security and allows the client to enjoy the learning process.”
Chris: “Certification gives you the confidence to present your knowledge of Simulation to a customer and present the capabilities of the software in a compelling way. Also, it enhances credibility to have the official backing of Autodesk when going to meet with potential clients about Simulation.”

Annotation Overrides in Civil 3D

February 27, 2014 By Leo Lavayen Leave a comment

I have wanted to write this one for a while now. As we all know, Civil 3D is great with its dynamic annotations and displaying information about objects, however sometimes we need to add an extra note. The software does provide a function to allow the user to add much needed notes without creating an additional style, via the use of the ribbon or right click with the Edit Label Text command. This allows designers an “AutoCAD” like text functionality with Civil 3D.

As seen below a created Civil 3D label has been edited for the Surface, Section View or Profile View objects. Also there are 2 styles in use in each view, one set to 1 decimal place, and the other set to 3 decimal places.

Spotlight on ASI Technical Support

February 26, 2014 By April Raque Leave a comment
Doug Folck
Lead Technical Support

Doug Folck, Lead Technical Support, is in our Technical Support Spotlight. I sat down with him to ask some questions about his role at Advanced Solutions, life and the things he does for fun.

How long have you been with Advanced Solutions?
In 1988, I began my own business oriented computer service company. Advanced Solutions quickly became my best customer. In 1993, I joined Advanced Solutions as VP of Operations.

What does a Lead Technical Support person do?
Engages in the daily queue of technical support cases, plus, mentors other tech support representatives. I work to create an environment, which enables continuous improvement.

What Autodesk software do you support on?
To some degree, all Autodesk products … I have a special interest and knowledge of GIS, infrastructure and mapping applications.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
There’s always something new to learn. Learning is living! If you’re not continually learning something new, then you merely exist.

Overview of Autodesk 360 and BIM 360 Cloud Services

February 25, 2014 By Thomas J. Kemp Leave a comment

Hey! You! Get off of My Cloud!

You may not realize it, but if you use a computer or a smartphone, you probably already use the cloud. Applications like Dropbox, Pandora, Netflix, Spotify and Evernote all take advantage of cloud computing and provide not only a wealth of content, but flexibility and mobility to the end user. The basic idea behind the cloud is that, instead of delivering data and content directly to the user, the user is being brought to a centralized source for data and content.

Let’s take a look at the advantages of working in the cloud.

  • First, the cloud provides access to unlimited computing power. Need information on a particular subject? Let Google or Wikipedia help find the answer. Need to generate a rendering or do some analysis of your latest building project? Autodesk has a solution to help you with that.
  • If you work in the cloud, you can share and access your data anyplace. Stuck in an airport with time to kill? You can work on that proposal saved to the team Dropbox account or login to Netflix and watch a movie.
  • Web based applications are always up to date. If you are running an application from the cloud, it is constantly updated as the developer adds features of fixes bugs. No need to download updates or install new versions.
  • Web applications are platform independent. Your data can be access from your PC at work, your Mac at home, your smartphone or tablet.
  • Finally, cloud applications and data is safer. Hosting applications and data remotely in the cloud provides greater level of security from viruses, malware, spyware and hardware failure.

Civil 3D Transparent Commands (bilingual)

February 24, 2014 By Leo Lavayen Leave a comment

As a technical experts and instructors, we are required to keep up our continuing education and certifications from Autodesk. During the last 40 credits we had to do, I started wondering if the courses were available in Spanish and I found that there were some. Then I wondered if AutoCAD Civil 3D was available as a download in Spanish ... and IT WAS!

So of course I had to download it and installed it. And although I am bilingual, all these translated civil terms were almost overwhelming. All the commands, menus, buttons and features appear in Spanish.

Adding the Geolocation Tab to the ribbon

February 19, 2014 By Leo Lavayen Leave a comment

I was recently at a client site and they expressed the desire to use several years of old color and black and white aerial photography. I took the opportunity to share the new LIVE MAP Service provided to 2014 users via Autodesk 360. If you don’t know what I’m talking about you can make reference to our old blog post that our very own Rob Wiederman created HERE.

This is really cool feature for the vanilla AutoCAD users who want to create maps. But it creates a small hurdle for my CIVIL 3D and MAP 3D users who want to put to use the new functionality. We will get the imagery but not the contextual ribbon seen if used in vanilla AutoCAD.

Yes… there are other posts out there on how to do this, but they ALL point to launching AutoCAD or whatever product “As AutoCAD”. I walk you through a method that allows you to add the needed tab from within the current CIVIL or MAP session.

The Problem
When using the GEOGRAPHICLOCATION command, from Civil 3D or Map 3D, there is no way to control the aerial background once it is on or change background map types.

How to Download Software from Autodesk's Virtual Agent

February 12, 2014 By Marina Hill Leave a comment

If you are unable to download directly from Subscription Center or you don’t have a Subscription Center account, this is another way to download software from Autodesk.com. The versions available from this site are current and 2/3 versions back (congruent to when the seat/suite was made available).

Before you start your download:

  • Close all other programs i.e., Outlook, etc.
  • Temporarily disable your pop-up blocker

Note: Your Anti-Virus may inhibit the download, so temporarily adjusting or disabling your anti-virus to allow the download and running of the Autodesk software may be necessary. Then go to the www.Autodesk.com to re-download your software.

You can download your products if you log into the Autodesk Subscription Center or you can download directly from the Autodesk Account Log In.

If you do not have an Autodesk account, use our Virtual Agent that can be found on the self-service Activation Log In page. The Virtual agent will download a completed installer file.

To download software without logging in, go to self-service Activation Log In page which takes you to this page & click ASK.

From there you’ll see this screen, click on Download Links…
