ISSUE:  Slow to Open Drawings in Civil 3D

According to support cases handled here at Advanced Solutions and during a few recent classes, performance issues were experienced from release 2013 all the way to 2017. The problem is found to be specific to drawings with external references. These drawings could take four to five minutes to open and were all under 5MB in size. Upon opening, slow performance was evident.

In an attempt to restore performance, ALL cleanup methods (Audits & Purges) were initiated on the base and all X-referenced drawings. Unfortunately, this cleanup did not result in any additional performance gains.

However, we found two tactics that reduced drawing open times to a mere 20 – 50 seconds.

1.  Assign a common layer in all drawings before exit. In this particular situation, the Layer selected was 0.
2.  Set a layer filter excluding ALL x-referenced layers before exit. In recent releases, the generation of a layer filter called “All non-Xref Layers” was automatic upon creation of an x-referenced drawing.
