The online resource SketchUp 3D Warehouse (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/) is an incredible source, but some models at times can look a bit odd when compared to the preview seen on the download page.
One of my favorite Autodesk presenters, Angel Espinoza, shared some insight into improving the quality of Aerial Images from models built using the Autodesk InfraWorks 360 Model Builder. Although Autodesk InfraWorks is usually referred as preliminary design tool, it can work great as a post-design too. By allowing to import and display completed Autodesk Civil 3D projects in context. The choices to transfer data from Civil 3D to InfraWorks are provided from the ribbons Output tab, the Export panel provides 2 choices: Export IMX and Export to LandXML. Each file has it’s pros and cons.
Exporting from Civil 3D LandXML Files
The LandXML file format allows the raw data to be written out in a non-platform specific format. The advantage is that with this method we are presented with the option to select exactly what we want to export. Once the command is executed a location to save the file has to be specified. A disadvantage is that sometimes the data looks quite right and at times it creates jagged elements.
Working off two previous posts, Object Data 101 (Part 1) and Themes using Object Data 101 (Part 2), we will be applying specific styles based on attached data. This post is not to be confused with Rob Widerman's on Style Rules in InfraWorks post, where styles are randomized. We will be assigning styles deliberately by creating a rule set and expressions that call for the road type and then setting a style to control the roadways appearance.
In this post we will be leveraging the connected streets class: Local, Major, Minor, Collector. In the Data Source Configuration dialog box, under the General area Description field the "FCLASS" attribute is read.
Working off a previous post, Object Data 101 (Part 1), I will be talking about how to perform a theme type analysis. In this case we will be leveraging the connected parcel data. If you have created themes using Autodesk Map 3D before, this task will be very familiar. The default look for the parcels (shown below) is a magenta outline with no fill.
As far as configuration, the necessary assignments have been done. In the Data Source Configuration dialog box, under the General area Description field the "ZONING" value is being set from the connected shape file.
Before you can analyze, stylize or display in a tooltip in Autodesk InfraWorks, data needs to be assigned appropriately. Since there is currently no way to examine the tabular object data within InfraWorks, we’ll have to rely on Autodesk Map 3D or AutoCAD Civil 3D to attach and decipher data.
Once data is connected in Civil 3D or Map 3D, use the Data Table or AutoCAD Properties to look at the tabular data. Each data source will have its unique object data assigned, at times oddly abbreviated or named.
A new offering in the InfraWorks portfolio is the Bridge Design for InfraWorks 360. As you can see in the capture below, it is located under Specialize. Others you may see are roadway and drainage design, depending on additional options purchased.
In the example I have created below, I have shown a proposed road crossing an existing highway.
One of the new options in InfraWorks 360 is the Model Builder. Model Builder is a preview only option, and requires the user to agree to terms prior to access.
It is designed for the user to type in an address, or zoom to a given area in which they would like to create a model as seen in the capture below. Once you have your given area chosen, simply enter a name for model and choose the 360 group associated with your account. These options are located in the bottom left as seen below. InfraWorks now goes out to the web to grab a surface, imagery, and pertinent information such as roads and buildings.
This past month, Autodesk Infraworks 360 was released. The user interface has been changed to be more contextual, were each icon will lead us to a specific group of commands.
As you can see from the capture, you are given a few choices to select from the top of the screen. For example if I select the I, the following options will be presented.
From here, create and manage your model, select model features, create conceptual features, and analyze your model.
